River Report

Salmon Lodge Fishing & River Report – August 10th to 16th, 2015

The 2nd week of August felt more like the 2nd week of June. The regular rainfall  has  maintained our rivers t perfect levels, we’ re still travelling with our boats like we do during the early season. Most of our pools are holding good numbers of salmon and a loads of fresh run fish are showing up on every tide. Its nice to be able to fish our high and medium water pools at this time of the season.

The Bonaventure has been producing very well, the water temperatures are perfect and even with high water dry fly action is great ! The Petite Cascapedia continues to fish very well and also holding a good number of fresh run salmon.  We have been having some great fishing on the Grand Cascapedia as well, late summer  is one of the best times of the season on the Grand especially as the water begins to cool with colder nights in the hills.

Carri Wicklund with her first Bonaventure salmon, congratulations Caari, nice fish!

Water levels are considerably higher than normal for this time of the years. The Bonaventure should be at the 15 mark but is currently flowing at 33 Cubic meters per second. The Grand Cascapedia’s flow should be at 12 to 15 but its been hovering between 50 and 60 . Normal August flow on the Petite is in the 10 to 12 range but its been in the 20 to 30 range for most of the summer.

With higher water levels we are using bigger fly’s. The ones to have are the Stone Ghost, Blue Charm, Undertaker and Green Butt. A host of patterns such as the Silver Doctor, Posh Tosh, Silver Wilkinson and Golden Highlander were also responsible for a good number of fish this past week, best sizes have been 6s, 8s. Wets worked very well last week  drys stoled the show. Again its been Green, Blue and Dark brown bombers in sizes 2 to 8.

Needless to say, Soren Hjortgaard was a happy angler after landing this one from the Petite Cascapedia, Congratulations Soren, see you next year.

It’s been a great year and with water conditions as they are, the fall season should be no different.

Until next week,
