A complex endeavor, done well - 7/27/2014

This was my second year at Salmon Lodge, but one of many trips to the Gaspe, beginning in the 60's when I was a student. Those reading this undoubtedly are already aware of the many facets of swinging flies for S.salar: the weather, the moon, the water level and temperature, and of course the mood of the fish. Therefore, it takes a special degree of commitment to host international anglers in the face of such an array of uncontrollable circumstances. Salmon Lodge met, and even surpassed, these challenges. Weather was unforgivably hot and brilliantly sunny. Fish were at a premium. And a hurricane was at our heels. Despite that, the kitchen staff rearranged their days so we could venture our out in the morning's glancing light. The guides could have had us back early, but stayed with us for some long difficult days, well beyond the conventional expectation. I sent some gear ahead of my week and the staff willingly picked it up at a remote site. The staff clearly wanted to please the guests. Meals were first rate, and evening conversation with European and British guests was intelligent and good natured. I plan to return the same week in 2015.
