"My wife and I have been guests at The Salmon Lodge for five years in a row. We go for four days, and we keep returning because of the friendliness and professionalism of the staff and for the excellent (albeit challenging) fishing. The staff, including guides, works hard at making you feel at home and is very accommodating to your needs. I like that the number of guests is limited to ten, housed in a charming, refurbished former private lodge built many years ago, with a spacious porch commanding a sweeping view of the Grand Cascapedia.
The meals (breakfast and dinner — lunch is a picnic on the river) are excellent. The food is simple, not overly fancy. I've been to other lodges that tout their cuisine and four-star chefs, an experience I can get in Manhattan and don't need on a salmon river. For me anyway, dining and accommodations at The Salmon Lodge hit the "sweet spot" between rusticity and sophistication.
There's a nice variety to the fishing, and over the course of a visit you can expect to fish both the Grand and Petit Cascapedia and the Bonaventure, each with its special charm and character. Like Atlantic salmon fishing throughout the Maritimes, it isn't easy fishing, with hookups probably averaging one every other day. But the ratio of salmon to grilse is high, maybe 5 to 1, and the chances of getting into a 20-plus-pounder are good."
